Hunter Yurachek Explains How Lane Kiffin's Departure Affects Ole Miss' CFP Standing (2025)

The Impact of Lane Kiffin's Departure on Ole Miss and the College Football Playoff: A Deep Dive

The recent news of LSU's pursuit of Lane Kiffin has sparked curiosity about the potential impact on Ole Miss and the College Football Playoff. As it turned out, the Rebels jumped a spot to No. 6, but how did this happen? According to CFP committee chair Hunter Yurachek, the answer lies in the committee's selection protocols and the unique situation surrounding Kiffin's departure.

Yurachek addressed the conversations within the room about Ole Miss, emphasizing that the committee discussed the availability of coaches and players. While Kiffin's departure was a topic of discussion, the committee's decision was influenced by the fact that they had not yet seen the Rebels without him on the sideline. This meant that the impact of his absence was not yet known, and therefore, it did not significantly factor into the rankings.

"We absolutely did talk about that," Yurachek said. "One of the principles in our selection protocols is the availability of coach and players. We not only talked about the situation at Ole Miss, but we also discussed the offensive coordinator position at Oregon, the head coaching positions at James Madison, North Texas, and Tulane. While I think those coaches are going to be coaching their respective teams, there’s obviously a distraction."

However, Yurachek also highlighted the committee's ability to evaluate teams based on their performance and the availability of key players. He referenced the Florida State situation in 2023 when the Seminoles missed the four-team College Football Playoff due to a season-ending injury to their quarterback, Jordan Travis. The committee had the opportunity to see what FSU looked like without Travis, but this is not the case with Ole Miss, as they have not yet played without Kiffin as head coach.

"I wasn’t a member of the committee a couple of years ago, but it’s been referenced in the room that the Florida State instance where they lost their quarterback, there were a couple of games that the committee had to evaluate where Florida State did not have their starting quarterback that they had for the majority of the season," Yurachek explained. "We don’t have any way to evaluate what Ole Miss looks like, plays like, without their head coach."

In conclusion, the impact of Lane Kiffin's departure on Ole Miss and the College Football Playoff remains uncertain. While the committee discussed the situation, the lack of data on the Rebels' performance without Kiffin on the sideline means that the impact of his absence is still unknown. As a result, the Rebels' ranking of No. 6 may be subject to change as the season progresses and more data becomes available.
